The committee of the National Assembly for expediting activities on the JEK2 project

The committees of the National Assembly for Infrastructure, Environment, and Spatial Planning, as well as for the Economy, held a joint session on Wednesday, October 11th, to discuss the importance of constructing a new nuclear power plant in Krško (JEK2). The urgent session, convened at the request of the parliamentary group SDS, was attended by the CEO of GEN energy, Dr. Dejan Paravan, and the head of the Technical Sector, Dr. Bruno Glaser.

Dr. Paravan informed the committee members that the procedures for the implementation of the JEK2 project need to be expedited, and a special law should be enacted for faster spatial integration. He emphasized that such an important project should not become a subject of daily political battles. According to him, addressing the challenges of decarbonization and achieving an adequate level of electricity self-sufficiency would make sense through a combination of investments in renewable energy sources and nuclear energy.

Dr. Glaser stated that, in GEN energy, the focus of the project is currently on initiating the preparation process for the national spatial plan. The goal is to carry out the spatial integration of JEK2 in such a way that the final investment decision on the project can be made by the year 2028.

The State Secretary for the National Nuclear Program in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister, Danijel Levičar, mentioned that among the key tasks of the government’s working group for coordinating preparatory activities on the JEK2 project are tracking the investor’s timeline and aligning specific legislation for JEK2.

At the end of the session, the committee members unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the acceleration of activities regarding the JEK2 project. They proposed to the government to continue the necessary activities for preparing the project in an efficient and transparent manner.
