Nuclear energy in Slovenia
The Krško Nuclear Power Plant (NEK) transmitted its first kWh of electricity to the grid in 1981. In its forty years of operation, it has become one of the most successful and safest nuclear power plants in the world. It regularly receives the highest possible rating for nuclear safety and operational readiness from the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO). This is also confirmation that Slovenia has vast nuclear knowledge, a sound safety culture and a well-developed nuclear infrastructure. The latter is an important advantage for Slovenia in the planning and achievement of our energy future.

Slovenia has more than 70 years of experience and people who are knowledgeable in the area of nuclear technology. Slovenia’s well-developed nuclear infrastructure gives it a major competitive advantage, as we have mastered a technology that will make an important contribution to independence from fossil fuels, and to the reliability of supply and sustainable development. Slovenian nuclear experts participate in numerous industrial, development and research projects in the area of nuclear technology, both at home and abroad. Slovenia has in place an extensive nuclear technology ecosystem that covers the entire spectrum, from regulatory authorities to educational and research institutions, production units and support services for radioactive waste management.
