For an informed discussion on the JEK2 project and the energy future of Slovenia

At the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Robert Golob, a meeting of the political leadership on Slovenia's energy self-sufficiency and the long-term use of nuclear energy, including the decision-making process regarding the construction of the second block of the nuclear power plant, took place today in Ljubljana. Representing GEN Energy, the project leader for the construction of the new nuclear power plant in Krško (JEK2), the meeting was attended by the CEO, Dr. Dejan Paravan.

GEN Energy is intensively continuing its activities related to the JEK2 project. According to calculations by the GEN Group, a combination of investments in renewable sources and nuclear energy is the most suitable for addressing the challenges of decarbonization and achieving an adequate level of electricity self-sufficiency in Slovenia. “Unified policy recognition of nuclear energy as an integral part of the solution for transitioning to a low-carbon and self-sufficient future is crucial for further preparatory activities on the JEK2 project. Support expressed in a referendum by the citizens of Slovenia would undoubtedly further accelerate project activities,” emphasized Paravan after today’s meeting.

GEN Energy’s activities are focused on preparing for an efficient process of integrating the new nuclear power plant into space, coordinated with the government’s working group for coordinating preparatory activities for the JEK2 project. The goal is to implement the acceptance of the national spatial plan (DPN) in a way that allows the final investment decision on the project to be made no later than 2028.

In parallel, several studies are in the final phase, including a seismic study of the location and a study on the connection of JEK2 to a capacity of 2,400 MW to the Slovenian power system. At the same time, proposals for business models and the selection process for choosing the supplier of JEK2 are being prepared.

Active participation with the provision of expert bases and comprehensive information

The question of the long-term use of nuclear energy with the state’s decision on JEK2 requires the broadest national and political consensus. As GEN Group has always actively contributed to strengthening energy literacy, in the coming months, we will actively participate in an informed discussion about the JEK2 project and Slovenia’s energy future by providing expert bases and comprehensive information before the announced referendum.
