Reliable and safe supply

It is a crucial and feasible project for the future supply of domestically produced electricity to Slovenia, and is the appropriate response to the key challenges of the energy trilemma. The reliable and weather-independent functioning of JEK2 will provide major support for increasing the proportion of renewable energy sources and thus Slovenia’s transition to a low-carbon society. As a reliable and abundant source of low-carbon electricity, nuclear power plants can also serve as a potential source for the production of clean heat, hydrogen and synthetic fuels in the future.

Reliable supply to household and industrial users, and the public sector

Reliable production of electricity 24 hours a day, every day of the year (except during refuelling and regularly scheduled maintenance).

Support for the introduction of RES

The reliable and weather-independent functioning of JEK2 will provide major support for increasing the proportion of renewable energy sources and thus Slovenia’s transition to a low-carbon society. As a reliable and abundant source of low-carbon electricity, nuclear power plants are also the most efficient source for the production of hydrogen.

Domestic energy source

Nuclear fuel at a nuclear power plant can be delivered and stored for several years in advance, while the reactor is typically fuelled every 18 months. Continuous production by a nuclear power plant is thus not exposed to any unforeseen geopolitical events that could affect the supply of fuel. This represents an important contribution to the improved safety of supply, while it also facilitates stable and competitive prices for household consumers, industry and the public sector over the long term.

Operational safety

Advanced technology in the form of a third-generation pressurised water reactor, compliant with the highest safety standards. Compliance with the highest international safety requirements.

Support for the stability of the Slovenian electric power grid

Due to the size of its turbine and generator, a nuclear power plant provides the most efficient ancillary services and contributes decisively to the stability of the electric power grid in terms of frequency control. It is important for appropriate voltage conditions in the transmission network.

Possibility of heat sharing

Positive impact on regional development due to the possibility of heat sharing for district heating, industrial steam, greenhouse heating in agriculture, etc.
